So I've been working on 'Ceremony' in one form or another for a little less than a year. But last night I muddled through the full 'script' in front of an audience for the first time. And it was revelatory.
I learned that maybe it's not quite as funny as maybe I thought it was. And that some parts are, perhaps, funnier than I thought they were. A good lesson.
I learned that the most powerful moments are quiet, honest, raw and vulnerable. And that those moments can be more freeing and poetic than the most intricate wordplay or choreography. A good lesson.
And I learned that there's still much to be done before this thing goes up in June. It's time to dig in, go deeper and see what we can find. Yikes.
Onwards!
